The Baltimore Sun Profiles Helping Up Mission's Veteran's Day Celebration

On the job as a member of the Coast Guard, Ryan Kazmarek said he learned responsibility and discipline. But when he was off duty, the Dundalk man struggled with a "work hard, party hard lifestyle" that led him to alcoholism and — after he left the service — homelessness.

To get back on his feet, Kazmarek joined Helping Up Mission, a Baltimore homeless shelter that provides housing, food and services to help its 500 members through long-term addiction recovery.

Eye surgeon gives Helping Up Mission program graduate the gift of sight

In his 14 years of providing free eye exams for the homeless and volunteering at the Helping Up Mission, Dr. Anthony Kameen had never seen a situation like that of 47-year-old Anthony Curtis.

Curtis was like many men at the Baltimore shelter — homeless, drug addicted and looking for support in completing the organization's 12-step recovery program.

When Kameen called in Curtis, the homeless man navigated to the exam room by placing his hands on the walls as he walked.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation Awards $19,000 to Helping Up Mission

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation said Wednesday it has awarded $362,000 to 18 Baltimore-area nonprofits, including Helping Up Mission.

The banking giant said the grants address critical needs, such as hunger and shelter, to longer term solutions that promote financial wellness through access to benefits and resources.

Baltimore Ophthalmologist Begins Special Program to Encourage Charitable Donation

Starting today, Kameen Eye Associates, a premier eye care provider in the greater Baltimore area, launched the “Donate & Save Campaign.” Through the end of August, any person donating at least $50 to Helping Up Mission, in Baltimore City, will be eligible for $500 off of their bilateral LASIK procedure.
